Conference report: Negotiating the fabric of the African University (South Africa)

“I consider myself an Afro-optimist. I believe our universities are building the Africa we want. [I hope to demonstrate that] our universities are not mere victims of colonisation, as they emerge out of that legacy and transform the systems as well as the students that go through them.” Dr Teboho Moja, Keynote speech.

Between September 12 and 14 2023, I took part in the international conference organized by three South African based Universities on the theme  Negotiating the fabric of the African University. The conference held at the University of the Western Cape, the University of Cape town and Stellenbosch University. The international conference brought together scholars from Germany, Kenya, Togo, USA, Ghana, Zimbabwe, UK, Tanzania, France, Nigeria, Switzerland, South Africa and Cameroon. I presented on the theme Global realities and local solutions to challenges in teaching and learning in sub-saharan universities: The Case of the University of Yaounde 1. The conference was both exciting and enriching. I am grateful to the AFRIUNI project for supporting my participation.
